At our arrival, we found that the rainy season (or maybe I should be clearer: the idiots who throw plastic into the sea!) had left a lot of garbage on the beaches and at the lagoon. Luckily we had a few days before the first photographers arrived, so I could organize a clean-up with the kindergarden of Achada Igreja, Maurizio and Tiziana, the new inhabitants of the house we lived in for 20 years, and a few members of the CARETTA group. Sadly their chief, Djonny has emigrated to Portugal, but my friend Nysca is still active. Also our guide Andriu helped. Within 2 hours the area around the small lagoon was cleaned of plastic garbage.
Bei unserer Ankunft stellten wir fest, dass die Regenzeit (oder vielleicht sollte ich deutlicher sagen: die Idioten die Plastik ins Meer werfen!) jede Menge Müll an den Stränden und in der Lagune hinterlassen hatte. Glücklicherweise hatten wir ein paar Tage Zeit, bevor die ersten Fotografen ankamen, sodass ich mit dem Kindergarten von Achada Igreja, Maurizio und Tiziana, den neuen Bewohnern des Hauses, in dem wir 20 Jahre lang gelebt hatten, und einigen Mitgliedern der CARETTA-Gruppe eine Aufräumaktion organisieren konnte. Leider ist ihr Chef, Djonny, nach Portugal ausgewandert, aber mein Freund Nysca ist immer noch aktiv. Auch unser Guide Andriu half. Innerhalb von 2 Stunden war der Bereich um die kleine Lagune von Plastikmüll befreit.
Zwei Regenpfeifer gaben uns zunächst Rätsel auf, aber dann war klar: der mit den dunklen Flecken unter den Flügeln, war ein Kiebitzregenpfeifer, der mit dem einheitlich grauen Unterflügel war ein amerikanischer Pluvialis dominica! Auch der Kleine Gelbschenkel ist ein amerikanischer Irrgast.
Two plovers puzzled us at first, but then it became clear: the one with the dark spot under its wings was a Grey Plover, the one with the uniformly grey underwings was an American Pluvialis dominica! Also the Lesser Yelloshank is an American vagrant.

Glücklicherweise hat die Regenzeit den Stausee von Poilao seit Jahren
zum ersten Mal wieder gefüllt. Ein Paradies für uns Vogelfotografen!

Beim Reiherbaum, der seit einigen Jahren als Nistplatz bekannt ist, konnten wir flügge Junge unterhalb des Baumes, von der Strasse aus beobachten. Ihre Fütterung erfolgte auf dem Nest. Der Altvogel hat eine schwarze Kappe, die Jungen haben einen roten Irokesenschnitt. Ein Purpurreiher im trockenen Maisfeld, perfekt getarnt.
On Boavista we spent the first evening in the white Viana Desert.
A beach and a cliff on the SW-coast is the best place for Tropicbirds. But this year their number is smaller and on the first morning we only see one from far. We return the next day and are rewarded with a nice flights-show of Raven, Kestrel, Osprey and Red-billed Tropicbird:
