La Lagune de la Somone, Senegal. A bird photographer's small paradise.

This relatively small lagoon is situated near a touristic area, not far from the airport. There are many men with small boats that offer tours, mostly at high tide, because then one can reach the two lakes at the back of the lagoon, where several Ospreys hunt for fish. It is instructive to see so many limicoles close together: Whimbrel and Curlew, Grey Plover an Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone and Oystercatcher, etc, etc., same applies to the differnt herons and egrets.

Curlew, Großer Brachvogel

Grey Heron, Graureiher

Western Reef Heron, Riffreiher

Caspian Tern, Raubseeschwalbe

Green-backed Heron, Mangrovenreiher

Osprey, Fischadler

Oystercatcher, Austernfischer

The lagoon at the Somone is a good place to see the shy Malachite Kingfisher:

A short stroll along the lagoon's shore and through the sandy roads that lead towards it can produce interesting birds:

Speckled Pidgeon, Guineataube

Coppery Sunbird

A very unexpected White-throated Bee-Eater

Little Bee-Eater, Zwergspint

Red-cheeked Cordon Bleu, Amaranth

Red-billed Firefinch

Black-rumped Waxbill, ein Astrild

A blooming tree attracts sunbirds:

Sonja has sent me some excellent pictures which I would like to present here:
