Presentation in Liceu and Clean-up, 27. and 28.2. 2014

Fredy, Frank and Wilson presented their programmes in front of 100 older Secondary School pupils.
Fredy talked about turtle and bird protection and eco tourism, Frank about environmental problems in Cape Verde and Wilson about the garbage problem. The two environmental organizations AUA and CARETA presented themselves. They recieve support from the Crowder-Messersmith Fund organized by the

On the next day there was no school (first day of carnival holidays!) so only a few kids turned up for the clean-up at the big lagoon. As also Fredy was kept up at UniCV it was decided to do a bigger clean-up at the lagoon later.
We cleaned a few hunded meters of beach anyway and burned the material.
We'll be back at the Liceu again with another presentation.

Presentation in Primary School Salina and Clean-up, 25. and 26. February 2014

Our activities (still funded by the Crowder-Messersmith Fund)

started with a presentation in the Primary School in Salina. The teachers had come together to listen to Fredy who talked about the importance of nature protection and a clean beach.
Domingos Lobo introduced his organisation AUA. Dunya and Edina presented two Power Point shows about water problems and about the garbage issue.

On the next day in the afternoon the teachers came with all pupils, about 150, to clean the beach.

Fredy with one group cleaned up the village entrance:

Setting fire to plastic garbage is certainly not the best method but there are no alternatives as long as
garbage collection and dumping or recycling are not developed better.

4th Excursion with Biology students, Sat., 22.2.2014

We had already made trainings at the lagoons and at the reservoir, so there was one important birding area left to show to the participants of the Nature Guide Course: the desert in the south-East of Santiago Island.
First we met in Ecotec-House for 4 intensive hours of bird identification and language training.

In the afternoon an open Hilux took the group out to Moia Moia. There we scanned the intertidal mud flat for birds: Whimbrel, Ostercatcher, Grey Heron, Kentish Plover, ...

Then we went on into the desert to see the spiecial species there:

Cream-coloured Courser, Wüstenrennvogel

Bar-tailed desert Lark [Ammomanes cincturus], Sandlerche
Black-crowned Sparrow Lark
Hoopoe Lark, Alaemon alaudipes, Wüstenläuferlerche

3rd Excursion with biology students, Saturday, 16.2.2014

This was the first training excursion with tourists. Andriu already has some experience with guiding them, so we took him with us. Dunya, Ayrton and Wilson were the participants. Our guests were
Mrs. Pechmann and her daughter Vera from Strass, Leibnitz.
We went to the big valley of Cidade Velha.
The focus was on language training and how to describe trees, flowers, agriculture...

There was a very strong wind and I worried that falling coconuts could be a danger for us. But we escaped unhurt.
Der starke Wind machte die Wanderung durch den Kokospalmenhain recht gefährlich!

Local low-tec: these leaves from a banana trunk give an excellent rope if you wet them and roll them in your hands.
