Ecotec-House open for tourists!

On the biggest beach of Santiago Island, Cabo Verde, near the town Pedra Badejo,
about 30km from the capital Praia and the international airport:

Casa Ecotec is owned by Mag. Hans Georg Stoisser, who founded the cooperation between Pedra Badejo and Leibnitz about 30 years ago. Dr. Herbert and Eva Bödendorfer are responsible for it.
The house is run on a non-profit basis in the context of an Intercultural Nature Guide Training.
Das Ecotec-Haus gehört Mag. Hans Georg stoisser, der vor ca. 30 Jahren die Städtefreundschaft
zwischen Pedra Badejo undn Leibnitz begründete. Dr. Herbert und Eva Bödendorfer sind derzeit dafür verantwortlich.
Das Haus wird im Rahmen eines Interkulturellen Naturführertrainings als non-profit Aktivität geführt.

The house has 3 rooms open for tourists, one with indoor bathroom, the others share a common bathroom.
Das Haus hat 3 Zmmer für Touristen geöffnet, eines davon mit angeschlossenem Bad/WC, die anderen haben ein gemeinsames Bad/WC.

The garden offers a magnificent sea view and many exotic plants.
Der Garten bietet einen großartigen Blick auf den Atlantik und enthält viele exotische Pflanzen.

The house does not offer luxury but sufficient standard for western travellers.
Das Haus bietet keinen Luxus, entspricht aber den Anforderungen westlicher Touristen.

Excellent cooking and drinks are available at short notice.
Auf Bestellung gibt es hervorragende Mahlzeiten und Getränke.

Senhora Celeste is the cook and housekeeper. Give her some money and she will do all the shopping. She buys fresh vegetables, fruit, fish etc. from local people.
Senhora Celeste ist Köchin und Haushälterin. Geben Sie ihr etwas Geld, damit sie einkaufen kann. Sie kauft frische Gemüse, Obst, Fisch etc. von lokalen Produzenten.

Papaya, Mangoes, Bananas, Pinhao, Guavas are some of the fruits that go into Celeste's fruit salad.


Celeste also cooks European style dishes like noodles, pies, Schnitzel, pizza but most of all wonderful fresh fish and tuna.
Celeste kann auch europäische Gerichte wie Nudeln, Auflauf, Schnitzel oder Pizza kochen, meist jedoch macht sie frischen Fisch und Thunfisch in allen Variationen.

The protected garden is a wonderful place to read and sun-bathe. The constant sea-breeze makes even the hottest summer days agreeably mild, - (around 27C), and winter temperatures never drop under 20C!! So it is actually summer all year round, with hopefully some rain in our autumn. Sea temperature is always around 24C, sometimes the wind and the surf make swimming dangerous but you can always play around in the water.
Der geschützte Garten eignet sich wunderbar zum Lesen und Sonnenbaden. Sogar die heissesten Sommertage sind durch den Meerwind angenehm (ca. 27C). Im Winter fällt die Temperatur nie unter 20 C! Also ist es eigentlich das ganze Jahr über Sommer. In unserem Herbst regnet es einige Tage, (hoffentlich!). Die Meerestemperatur ist ganzjährig um 24C, manchmal ist das Baden durch den Wind und die Brandung gefährlich.

We have invested quite a lot of irrigation water to produce a little green paradise garden here in the coastal desert:

Even without leaving the house you can watch some of the endemic birds: here Passer iagoensis, feeding on Aloe Vera seeds:
Ohne das Haus zu verlassen kann man den endemischen Jagosperling beobachten: Passer iagoensis. Er kommt zu den blühenden Aloen.

This is the "Passerinho", a kingfisher species.

Whales can be seen from the house!

There is a lagoon 200m from the house where you can watch up to 15 species of wading birds, herons, spoonbills, etc. For bird photography a collapsible hide is available.

The best birding place, the lake and the dam, is only 10 min drive away!

The house is situated in Achada Igreja, a very poor village. Part of the money you pay for staying in the house goes to the village development committee and you are invited to give a donation.
Das Haus liegt in Achada Igreja, einem sehr armen Dorf. Ein Teil des Geldes, das Sie für Ihren Aufenthalt zahlen, geht an das Dorfentwicklungskommittee und sie werden um eine Spende gebeten.


Please do not give sweets or other "presents" to the kids in the village. This would only induce begging and make life difficult for tourists after you! If you wish to help please leave a donation for the village.
Bitte geben Sie auf keinen Fall Zuckerln oder andere "Geschenke" an die Kinder des Dorfes. Dies würde zum Betteln ermutigen und das Leben der Touristen schwer machen, die nach Ihnen kommen. Wenn Sie dem Dorf helfen wollen, lassen Sie eine Spende zurück.

Behind the village there is a big green valley which offers nice walks and is perfect for jogging.
(So is the beach at low tide!)
Hinter dem Dorf ist ein großes grünes Tal. Ideal zum Wandern, ebenso wie der Strand bei Ebbe.

"Fredy" Alecson Cardoso is in charge of the touristic managment. He is an excellent nature guide and birdwatcher. He can offer you an endless variety of walks and hikes of all difficulties all over Santiago. Ask for the list of hikes! Fredy speaks English very well. The money he earns with running the house helps him finance his studies to be an English teacher.
Fredy ist für den touristischen Betrieb während unserer Abwesenheit verantwortlich. Er ist ein ausgezeichneter Naturführer und Vogelbeobachter. Er kann Ihnen unsere Wanderungen auf der ganzen Isel Santiago anbieten. Er spricht hervorragend Englisch und finanziert sich mit der Führerarbeit sein Studium.

Andriu also speaks some English and French. He is at your service as a guide when Fredy is busy studiying in Praia.
